Read Major Taylor's Own Story, Free

1 min read

Major Taylor told his own story in his 1928 autobiography, The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World. It's in the public domain now, which means anyone can read it free, right from a phone. No account or sign-in needed.

Why this book matters

Major Taylor was the first Black sports superstar in America. He raced in the Jim Crow era, when he had to fight just to reach the starting line. He faced closed doors and open hostility, and he answered with speed and dignity. He wrote this book in his retirement so the record would be his own.

Where the name began

In 1979, a group of Columbus, Ohio riders founded the Major Taylor Cycling Club of Columbus. It was the first club anywhere to carry the name "Major Taylor Cycling Club." Today, more than 50 clubs carry the Major Taylor name and mission across 27 states, plus clubs in 4 other countries, for 5 countries in all. Dozens more clubs honor his legacy as patrons of the Major Taylor Association.
