Legacy

Marshall Walter Major Taylor was an African American professional track cyclist who made history in the late 1800s and early 1900s as one of the most successful bicyclists of his time. He dominated the sport and was the world sprint champion from 1899-1900. Taylor also set various world and amateur records, making him the first black athlete to be an international sports star. Though faced with numerous institutionalized racial inequalities, Taylor remained resilient and an unrelenting advocate for the rights of African Americans. His legacy continues to inspire many to pursue cycling and other sports and to strive for excellence.
